WICANI: The home of happy collies!

Breeding 'HOLISTIC' Collies! ...

Judging Appointments and Critiques

Many people enter the breed and expect to be judging within a few short years. I first sat ringside watching Rough Collies being judged in 1972.

In 1974 i bought my first Rough Collie, not as a pet alone although she was dearly loved and a house dog, but i bought her primarily as a show and brood bitch. I won my first Stud book number in 1976...in those days this was no mean feat. In those far off days the Limit bitch class had an entry of 36 bitches, and Leila was placed first of 36!

For many years I did not consider myself worthy of accepting a judging appointment. In those days we believed we must serve an apprenticeship. There is so much to learn about a breed, judging requires integrity and knowledge. I accepted my first judging appointment in 1997...the same year i bred my first UK Champion, and 2 years after breeding my first overseas Champion. Exactly 25 years after attending my first show, 23 years after entering the show ring with a Collie, and 21 years after breeding my first litter.

I see 'young' exhibitors accepting judging appointments after breeding less than a handful of litters, and before they have even won a SBN. In depth knowledge of a breed comes with maturity, and maturity takes time and cannot be learned solely from books. We all have to begin somewhere, and good luck to those starting out in their judging career, i hope you are mature enough to take on this huge responsibility.

May 2011   I fulfilled my first overseas judging appointment awarding CAC in Moscow. I would like to thank the sporting exhibitors for accepting my decisions gracefully and giving me a lovely entry.  Since then I have enjoyed judging in Germany, Prague, Israel, Switzerland, Norway, as well as here in my home Country. I love judging but lead such a busy life, it seems I have failed to add my critiques to this page for some time, I must try to rectify this! It never fails to amaze me how many people, (whose dogs I have never judged), still come to this page and actually read through everything written, sometimes things that even I forgot about (things I wrote here many years ago), are mentioned by them, so I say 'thank you' for keeping me on my toes!

For those interested here are my judging appointments with my critiques and thoughts after judging. If you were placed at any of these shows and would like to see a photo of your dog included in my critique, feel free to email a suitable photo to me. In future my husband  Keith will happily take photos of my main winners after the show, and should any of these photos prove suitable, with the approval of the owners, we can place them within my critiques. If your dog was unplaced or there is no critique available  and you would like to know my opinions and reasons for my decision, please feel free to email me at wicanicollies@langtoft.net
